What does Christian love look like?

Many of us have been scarred or just disappointed by the church or people in it. We expected a place of total love and acceptance. In these few verses Paul gives us four pointers as to what love amongst Christ’s brothers and sisters should look like…

Philippians 1:8-11 (NIV)

8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

Paul’s affection for the Philippians is clear. It is the Christian love of Christ that only comes when believers are close to God. His prayer is that they too would grow in love.

Why?
– to discern what is best, to know what is right. Closeness to God’s heart means hearing his heartbeat.
– to be pure and blameless for the day of Christ
– to live righteous lives
– to bring glory to God

How?
– Worship. Get close to God by thanking him every day, more than once. Tell him how awesome he is. Love God with all your heart. When worship leads to a sense of God’s closeness it is hard to slander your brother or sister!

Many of us have been scarred or just disappointed by the church. Some of us have been to blame for making others feeling that way.
